Snow White and the Huntsman REVIEW
Dir. by Rupert Sanders
Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron & Chris Hemsworth
Here we are again, another re-imagining of a classic fairy tale. There are so many ways that this movie could have been crap, but surprisingly it isn’t crap at all.
The story was really good. I loved how they used the mythology of “the one” kind of like Neo of The Matrix or Harry Potter. In this movie it’s obviously Snow White, and she is the only one who can kill the evil queen Ravenna. The whole world of Snow White is magical, medieval and kind of reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings and at some point it oddly reminded me of Game of Thrones. The tone of the whole movie is very dark and serious. It also shows that they made this movie with the intent of making a very well-made film.
The characters where also well-written. They’re motivations where clear, they were all 3 dimensional and peeked our interest. Speaking of characters, the evil Queen Ravenna was a really great character. She is evil to the very core, and despite the PG13 rating the movie showed everyone why. As a lot of people say, you can’t have a hero if you don’t have a great villain. The contrast between the queen and Snow White was just spot on. The visuals were really good as well. The magical world can’t be magical without magical creatures (sorry i’m still a bit hungover).
Charlize Theron who plays the queen was amazing. She embodied that character really well, and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the queen. Chris Hemsworth was good also. After his success playing Thor and the huntsmen, I can definitely say Chris might just be one of the up and coming actors to look out for. Sadly, I can’t say the same with Kristen Stewart. She just really needs to push herself more. This year we will once again have to suffer through another Twilight movie, and thank god it’s the last one. Kristen really needs to step up once the Twilight series has finished.
My main problem with this movie was the pacing. There were moments that I just kept saying “can we move on with the story please?!” These moments were unfortunately long and just uninteresting. Well they started interesting and because they just played it too long became uninteresting. Also the fight scenes just begged to be bigger and better.
With all that said it was generally a good time at the movies.
MY RATING 3/5
